Thaem Daeng (Playing Cards)
Based on the popular SoutheastAsian card game Thaem Daeng (they-m, Day-ng), Elsie Yong Design was onboarded to this passion project to provide Laotian inspired designs and utilize a red, green and yellow-gold color theme. The card deck will contain enough detail to pay homage to the Lao culture from traditional wear, symbolism, and mythology.

The Jack a Naga dragon
The Joker is a tiger balm as a funny inside joke to Lao culture.
Digital Sketches
In the initial phase of my creative process, I focused on the fundamental forms of the Lao king and Queen. First, the line work was established to confirm where we wanted the most detail. Reviewing the line work first allowed me to refine proportions, gestures, and facial features with precision. This approach enabled me to capture the regal presence and cultural significance embodied by the Lao monarchs, ensuring a harmonious synthesis of form and expression in the final composition with color.
Typography
The bold type allows the box to stand out and offer an interest for its use in color to type. Bold offers a wider space to let the golden yellow and border of orange captivate the viewers. Thaem Daeng draws your focus in, allowing the large type to create curiosity.

Color
Authentic colors of Laos range from gold and silver to forest green and vibrant reds. I utilized these commonly used colors in traditional wear, temple structure, and belief in bringing good luck into the card deck.
